Complete guide: Time Duration
Updated:
Gross duration subtracts start time from end time. For a midnight-crossing shift choose next day to add 24 hours before subtracting. From 22:00 to 06:00 next day is eight hours. Equal start and end times mean zero hours on the same day or 24 hours next day.
Excluded break time is deducted once per shift. Eight gross hours minus 30 minutes yields seven hours 30 minutes net, or 7.5 decimal hours. Total time multiplies net duration by identical shifts without prior rounding. Minutes are not hundredths of an hour: 15 minutes equals 0.25 hours.
Shifts from zero to 24 hours and breaks no longer than the shift are supported. This measures clock hours without a date or timezone: daylight saving is not corrected. It does not determine overtime, paid breaks or employment entitlements; those depend on country, agreement and contract.
How it works
- 1Enter start, end and whether it ends next day.
- 2Subtract excluded break minutes.
- 3Multiply net time by identical shifts.
Frequently asked questions
Does 7:30 equal 7.30 decimal hours?
No. 30 minutes is half an hour: 7 h 30 min = 7.5 decimal hours.
Does a shared link preserve my dates?
Yes. It keeps entered dates, times and options, including the reference date; they are not replaced with the day a recipient opens the link. Sharing a birth date reveals that information to the recipient.
